Re: Project AE86.
Thanks mannen.
I removed some parts from the 4age that came out of the car.
Some parts are ok but others are in bad condition.
Like the alternator, the bolt that held it in place on the bracket was stuck to aluminium casing, no way to get it loose.
"Luckily" the alternator was in such a bad shape anyway I could just cut the alternator of the bracket:

Another I was not pleased to find corroded was the neck for the radiator hose, I sandblasted it for cleaning and it came out like this:

That doesn't look like it's going to be watertight anymore.
Then this, maybe it's already a known fact but for me it was new:

All the cooling holes are bigger on the 20V engine, could it be the 20V pump pushes more water around in the angine?
And if so what could be the consequenses of using the restricting 16V parts on it?

Re: Project AE86.
Today I made a first effort for the coolant guide on the back of the head, as part of the waterline kit I'm going to make.
The part that goes here:

Anyway, this is what I came up with:

Maybe there wil be a hole made for a sensor of some kind, but I need to find how many and which sensors I need to use.
Also, I chose to make a outside pass because I don't want to take the head off the block, so grinding is not an option.
I will use an o-ring as a gasket, this gives me more freedom in choosing the shape I want.

Re: Project AE86.
Got the parts back from the electroplater, first parts that are finished on the project, always a milestone!!
Overview:

Box o' bolts:

Other stuff, it's gold I tell ya, GOLD!!!

Next up, getting things ready for powdercoating!

Re: Project AE86.
I had the drawing put onto cellophane or whatever you call it in English, but it's see thru.
To check if my drawing would cover the holes on the back of the head properly.
And it's not to bad actually, only adjustment I have to make is to place the o-ring a bit more to the outside.

Here you see the reason for the change, the top of the hole sticks out a bit more than I anticipated, 1mm more offset to the outside with the 0-ring will fix that:

And this one is fine by me:

The engine I bought was made ready for the autocross, so they already had taken off the dizzy and put this in it's place:

The inner part looks like something that was cut of the original part that was on the dizzy, can anyone confirm this?
A look inside the hole:

Does this look normal or are there parts missing?
I will take off the valve covers later so I can take better pics.

Re: Project AE86.
As said before, my engine came with this block off for the original dizzy placement.

That looks like crap off course, so I made another drawing:

Only thing is, I don't know if I need this space for a camshaft position sensor.
For the aftermarket ECU I mean.
I know it is possible to put an EDIS sensor on the crank pulley or use this position for something similar.

Re: Project AE86.
So this is what my waterpump on the blacktop looks like, how bad will it be in the engine, anyone has experience with this?

Had the engine starter refurbished, relais was kaput, love it when things look like new.
:

16V waterpump is not a direct swap it seems, I had to grind away a small piece on the block for it to fit:

And the water bypass pipe is very close to the water exit, got to find a nice solution or that:

Re: Project AE86.
The alternator bracketis also not a direct fit, the time belt tensioner is in the way, how is this usually delt with, grind away a part of the bracket or maybe use a 16V time belt tensioner, anyone has experience??

Head light blots broke off, no clue how to fix this
:

Prepared some stuff for powdercoating, alot of sandblasting (no pic, sorry), and this:

After sandblasting it became obvious how much the rust has eaten away:

I also bought a engine rotisserie, cheap and very handy, removed the oilpan to see if things were ok. I'll remove the caps later to see how the bearings are doing.
Oil looked ok, no metal shrapnel anywhere.

Re: Project AE86.

Re: Project AE86.
@Tom & Rjay,
Thanks.
@ Brian,

Re: Project AE86.
Small update,
I put the steering house back together, it's got the quaife quick rack inside.

I also made a beginning with the coolant bypass block for the blacktop:

And I also moved the chassis to a different location for the final touches before sandblasting.
At this location I can work more often than the other, plus it has hetaing and lots of tools.
More news on that later.
