Als klein kind in de begin jaren 90, ging ik vaak naar de bibliotheek om dan autoboeken te lenen. Deze boeken zaten dan vol met prototypes van auto's die voor de toekomst bestemd waren of nooit uitgebracht waren... Ik wil graag een supermooi topic vol met AWESOME cars! uit die jaren 90, 80 en hell zelfs daarvoor. Protoypes en eventueel er een mooi verhaal bij. Ik weet dat er hier wat dat betreft veel kennis rondloopt.

Ik start met Peugeot Oxia

Nobody had to look twice to realize what the1988 Peugeot Oxia concept car was meant to be: A high-performance touring coupe. Spotlighted at the Paris Auto Show, the 1988 Peugeot Oxia concept car looked like it had just been driven in from a race track -- and a race track of the future, at that.

back to the future met de aston martin Bulldog?

De Bulldog was, anders dan alle Aston Martin modellen tot dan toe, voorzien van een middenmotor. Hij stond op een robuust ruggegraatchassis. De voorwielophanging bestond uit een double wishbone met schroefveren en dwarsstabilisatoren, achter werd een DeDion-as met schroefveren, langsgeleiders en Watt-stangenstelsel gemonteerd. Voor de aandrijving werd de 5,3 liter achtcilindermotor uit eigen huis genomen, die echter wel over twee Garrett uitlaatturbo's beschikte en zodoende (al naar gelang de bron), 600 of zelfs 700 pk leverde. Een tweede exemplaar van deze motor werd in 1980 in één exemplaar van de Aston Martin Lagonda toegepast.

Ferrari Mythos kwam meteen bij mij boven:

De Ferrari Mythos was een conceptwagen van het Italiaanse automerk Ferrari, ontworpen door Pininfarina. De wagen werd in 1989 aan het publiek voorgesteld tijdens de Tokyo Motor Show. Hoewel de Mythos niet bedoeld was om publiek te verkopen bezit Hassanal Bolkiah, sultan van Brunei, er twee. Het derde exemplaar is terug te vinden in het Pininfarina Style Center in Cambiano.
De wagen werd gebouwd op het platform van de Ferrari Testarossa met een 4.9 liter-motor die een topsnelheid behaalde van 290 km/u.

Maserati Boomerang - 1972

The design of the Boomerang would resonate through Giugiaro's future designs for many years. Its sharp angles and wedge shape could be easily seen in the Maserati Merak, the Lotus Esprit, and the De Lorean DMC-12. Powered by a 310 bhp (230 kW) 4.7L V8 engine driving the rear wheels, 5 speed manual transmission, and having a fully decked out interior. With a unique dashboard layout where the steering wheel and gauge cluster are part of a single console that emerges from the dash, and the steering wheel rotates around the stationary gauges.

De Mercedes C111.

Mercedes-Benz C111 met Wankelmotor.

De C111 was de naam voor een reeks prototypes (concept cars) van het Duitse Mercedes-Benz. Aan het einde van de jaren 60 was er veel belangstelling voor de toepassingsmogelijkheden van de wankelmotor. Ook Mercedes deed daaraan mee en bouwde een serie prototypes die werden gebruikt voor het testen van verschillende materialen en technieken. De auto's van het type C111 waren in feite rijdende laboratoria en deden vele jaren dienst.
De C111 IID haalde een topsnelheid van ruim 300 km/u. De carrosserie was gemaakt van kunststof, verstevigd met hars. De wankelmotor bevond zich tussen de stoelen en de achteras (middenmotor). In 1979 werd de C111 voorzien van een dieselmotor waarmee hij het snelheidsrecord van een diesel op de piste in de wacht sleepte. De C111 IV, die veel meer weg had van een vliegtuig dan van een auto, haalde een topsnelheid van maar liefst 404 km/u. Pogingen om de prestaties van de C111 te evenaren zijn nog steeds niet gelukt.
Het sportieve uiterlijk, dat onderstreept werd door de oranje kleur en de vleugeldeuren, zorgde overigens voor een flinke druk vanuit de markt. Menigeen heeft Mercedes in die jaren verzocht de C111 in productie te nemen. Mercedes hield echter vol dat het een experimenteel prototype was, dat niet voor productie bestemd was. Hierdoor is de C111 nooit verkocht.

Mazda rx500

Originally displayed at the Tokyo show in 1970, this Mazda RX-500 Concept features styling similar to the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO Breadvan, gullwing doors that swing forward, and a 491cc rotary engine just behind the seats. Weighing in at just 1873 pounds, the 247-horsepower concept was said to have reached nearly 150 mph on Mazda's test track.

Ford Ghia Action.

The ultimate expression of 70's 'wedge' styling, Ghia's Action prototype stunned crowds at it's 1978 introduction. The Action featured no less than a Formula 1 race engine, rear mounted over the fully enclosed rear wheels. With the Action, Ford (who owned Ghia) produced one of the most dramatic shapes of the 70's.

Peugeot Proxima

Developed to showcase some of the technology used in the World Rally Championship winner, Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, Proxima concept is powered by a 2.8-liter V6 engine that produces 600 hp (442 kW) and 608 Nm of max torque thanks to a turbo and two water-liquid intercooler attached to it.

Proxima is a non-permanent 4 wheels drive vehicle: if a risk of skidding is detected, the power is transferred to the front axle by the closing of a second multi-disk clutch, moved by an electronic module. The braking systems features ventilated carbon discs and ABS, and the suspensions are made up of front and rear dual A-arms, derived from the successful simulation analysis used to create the 205 GTI and 205 Turbo 16 models.

Nissan Mid4

First Unveiled at the 1985 Frankfurt Autoshow, the MID4 was a concept car designed by Nissan to originally go on sale in the mid-late 1980s. Nissan had aimed the MID4 to compete with European supercars from Porsche and Ferrari. It featured a mid-engined all wheel drive layout as well as a wide array of technology and features that would eventually find their way into other Nissan production cars. The MID4 prototypes would evolve into the MID4 II, though it would never be put into production.

Bravo:

Bertone presented study 114, the new Lamborghini Bravo, on the 1974 Turin Auto show, it was designated to be the successor of the P300 Urraco, and used the same mechanicals.
The Bravo was a very low-slung car, with several stylistic references to the Countach, the new styled wheels on the Bravo, among other things would later end up on the Countach. The Bravo name was another reference to the raging bull emblem, a return after the LP400 Countach, whose name was in no way connected to a bull.
Like the Countach, the Bravo was a futuristic looking car, but it was completely functional, this prototype even ran more than 40.000 very hard test-miles before it ended up in the Bertone museum. The Bravo used a completely new design for the window arrangement, they were rather dark and the front windscreen seemed to continue into the side windows without any windshield post being shown, this created an impressive effect of continuity, the side windows actually went straight into the rear air intakes.
Another styling feature were the front and rear hoods, by using rectangular air intakes, and continuing this same design for the pop-up headlamps together with the all-new 'five-cylinders'-theme wheels that were later used on the Countach and the Silhouette, the Bravo looked very good, and at some time even production of this car was possible, but in the end it wasn't commercialized.
The Bravo was a true stylistic masterpiece, however the interior, as on most prototype cars was not as well finished as the exterior. The passenger compartment seemed to be for Italians only, no way would a tall person fit into it, as for the dashboard, it was only a plank with the most important dials built into it, the complete picture looked rather good, but if the car was to be put into production, the interior had to be completely redesigned.
After being displayed at various Auto shows all over the world, and covering over 40.000 miles, the Bravo was finally retired to Bertone's private museum, where it can still be admired at this time, next to several other dream-cars.
The Bravo was universally admired, but 1974 was no time for Lamborghini to start building a completely new car, so the Bravo remained a one-off.

Lamborghini/Chrysler Portofino:

Back in 1986, Kevin Verduyn developed the Navajo, a concept car for Chrysler, but the project never got beyond the clay model. By refining some details, the Navajo was transformed into the Portofino, a show car to symbolize the Chrysler takeover of Lamborghini, the badges on the car show the raging bull inside the famous Chrysler logo.
The Portofino was built on a Jalpa chassis, which had to be lengthened by 66 cm to allow the space for four seats. The Jalpa engine and transmission were also used, but the main attraction were the four horizontally hinged doors, the two front ones opened just like on the Countach, while the two rear doors were hinged in the rear, and also opened upward, thus eliminating a door sill.
The exterior styling was aerodynamic, a bit heavy for a real Italian sports car, but the Portofino could seat four passengers, and at speeds true to a real Italian car.
The Portofino was built by Coggiola in Turin and was unveiled to the public on the late 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show. The Portofino prototype traveled all over the world and was put on display on various Auto Shows before it disappeared. The interior of this car was very well finished, with hand-sewn leather seats and a completely adjustable cockpit, this meant the seats, the instrument pod, the steering wheel and even the switchgear.
The idea behind the Portofino can be compared with the Marzal, but it is very unlikely that either company will ever produce the Portofino, the Portofino was however used to create the Eagle Optima, a show car for the Nineties, used by Chrysler. The Portofino was actually completely functional, and could travel at a 240 Km/h. top speed.
Recently a fan of this website told me the Portofino was wrecked in the late Eighties, however Michael J. Rollins informed me the actual car was rebuilt by Metalcrafters in Costa Mesa, California. During this rebuild, the Portofino has been fitted with real glass instead of the plexiglass used on the prototype, also the windscreen was now laminated glass and all glass surfaces become tinted.

Lamborghini Genesis:

On April 21, 1988 at the Turin Motor Show, the Genesis was first shown to the public, after some 30,000 man hours had been invested in it by Bertone.
Marc Deschamps, chief designer of Centro Stile Bertone, mostly designed the Genesis and it looked like a sporty mini-van. However, the overall impression was one of speed and performance. Power was delivered by the well-known Lamborghini Countach Quattrovalvole engine, still pumping out 455 bhp at 7000 rpm.
The engine was mounted at the front in a longitudinal position, with the front seats partly on top of it.
On the Genesis the engine was coupled to a Chrysler TorqueFlite three-speed automatic gearbox instead of the usual five-speed manual. Because of this automatic gearbox, the acceleration was rather slow, mainly because the top gear ratio was too long, therefore high revs took a long time to reach.
The Genesis was mounted on a shortened chassis with a 2650mm wheelbase like the a Lamborghini Espada, while the overall length of the car was only 4475 mm, the width of 2000 mm gave the Genesis a very wide appearance.
Therefore, the interior was very spacious, and you entered this cockpit through two large gullwing doors for the front seats, while the rear seats could be reached through a sliding door on each side. Five people could be seated in the Genesis, these seats were a completely new design, upholstered in red and grey Alcantara leather.
The front passenger seat had in fact two cushions, one to the front and one to the rear, the backrest could be turned 180 degree, so the passenger could face either forward or backward.
The brakes worked fine ... if you pushed hard enough, but the suspension suffered from the heavy weight of about 1800 Kg. However the overall impression of the Bertone Genesis was very good, in fact, with the production of the LM-002 halted, Lamborghini could easily have used the LM's production line for a Genesis style model, or for the Jalpa heir, the P140.

Echt een ontzettend gaaf ding. Oorspronkelijk kon de auto helemaal niet rijden, maar de eigenaar heeft hem voorzien van remmen, brandstofleidingen etc.

Ik had deze foto's wel eens gezien, maar ik had geen idee dat deze auto (en nog vele andere Lotussen) bij mij in het dorp stond.
