De 24 uur van Brooklands wordt opgedeeld in 2x 12 uur van ouderwetse lol met ouderwetse auto's (en dito bestuurders meestal),
It was a lovely moment, that encapsulated the Brooklands Double 12 – an event that's become part of the historic motor sport furniture: the crowd cheered as Mr Ron Birkett Esq launched the FL 1909 race car from the test hill start line at Brooklands.
The pilot and junior co driver were sporting dapper period raceware as they ascended the 107m 1-in-4 incline. They were taking part in the Brooklands Double Twelve Motoring Festival organised by the Brooklands Museum in conjunction with the Vintage Sports-Car Club. The event attracted around 250 classic and vintage cars and motorcycles.
A crowd of 5500 came to celebrate Britain’s only serious 24-hour race, be it divided into two 12-hour races so as not to disturb the sleep of Brooklands neighbours! The 21st century event consists of a Saturday programme of speed trials on the track of Mercedes-Benz World adjacent to the Museum, whose attractions included jive dancing, a fun fair, classic car club displays and the fine museum exhibits.
On Sunday, and in bright sunshine and the place was humming with crowds mingling among the cars that were being judged for the concours. Many owners dressed the part, and every now and then people parted as cars headed to the auto tests on the famous banking or test hill.
Highlight of the day was the mighty Rolls Royce aero engine special, which burnt so much rubber the smoke covered its climb up the hill. The festival is one of a growing number of events held at Brooklands that has its roots directly in automotive history.
