BMW 645i - open differential (ie lame)
BMW M5 e39 - LSD with 25% lockup
BMW M6 - LSD with a 0-100% fully variable lockup (BMW M Variable Differential).
The Variable Diff was introduced on the BMW e46 M3 and is also in the e60 M5, but not the older stuff. Now visualise how an LSD (with high lockup, say 50% plus) would help driving on our $hitty muddy roads, snow and ice etc. True mechanical LSDs are super important to RWD cars and FWDs with decent power/torque.
