The Grand Prix driver Marc Surer of Switzerland was seriously injured and his co-driver, Michel Wyder, was killed today when their Ford RS 200 lost control during a rally in West Germany, ran into a tree and burst into flames.
The accident occurred during the 55-kilometer Hesse Rally, the fourth of eight events in West Germany's championship competition.
Wyder's death was the eighth in major auto-racing events this year and the fourth in less than a month. He was 24 years old.
Surer, 34, suffered a broken pelvis, two broken legs and second-degree burns on his hands and arms, and was hospitalized in serious condition. He was pulled out of the burning Ford by rescue workers and immersed in a nearby brook to douse the flames.
