Edgeland House door Bercy Chen Studio

Edgeland House is located on a rehabilitated brownfield site and is a modern re‐interpretation of one of the oldest housing typologies in North America, the Native American Pit House. The Pit House, typically sunken, takes advantage of the earth’s mass to maintain thermal comfort throughout the year. Like this timeless dwelling, Edgeland House’s relationship to the landscape both in terms of approach as well as building performance involves an insulative green roof and a 7‐foot excavation‐ gaining benefits from the earth’s mass to help it stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Such an architectural setting presents an opportunity for maximum energy efficiency when combined with high performance systems such as the integrated hydronic HVAC system. The mechanical system combines: hydronic heating and a green roof for maximum energy efficiency.
Edgeland House is about healing the land and ameliorating the scars of the site’s industrial past. The project raises awareness about a diminishing natural landscape and its finite resources by creating a balance between the surrounding industrial zone and the natural river residing on the opposite side of the site.
Both visually and functionally, Edgeland House touches on architecture as site‐specific installation art and as an extension of the landscape. The program is broken up into two separate pavilions, for the living and sleeping quarters, and requires direct contact with the outside elements to pass from one to the other. This project sets new standards for sustainability while providing great aesthetic qualities through its small footprint and integrated mechanical features.
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center collaborated to reintroduce over 40 native species of plants and wildflowers to the Edgeland House green roof and site, serving to help protect the local ecosystem.

Ik wil een paar (3) van dat soort huizen in de achtertuin bouwen, als duinvillas. Zeer strak en extreem knap!

The Exbury Egg by SPUD Group, PAD studio and Stephen Turner.

“Raising awareness of the past and the unfolding present of a very special location will be the task, whist living in an ethical relationship with nature and treading as lightly as possible upon the land.” Stephen Turner

Conceived through the study of the nesting instincts of seabirds on the shore, this egg was designed for the incubation and hatching of work by artist Stephen Turner. Created as a collaboration between the artist, SPUD Group, and PAD studio, the self-sufficient structure will serve the artist as a “residency” and vantage point from which he will observe 365 days of life on the estuary of the River Beaulieu, in England. Despite its remote location, the design focuses on producing a practical work environment without jeopardizing its two key premises of “Lean, Green and Clean” and “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.” Using Turner’s daily routines to calculate potential energy requirements, the egg uses solar power to provide year-round electricity for anything from laptop and cellphone charging through to seasonal heating and cooling.

Furthermore, empathic to the local environment, the construct itself has a strong focus on vernacular construction. Although this could have easily taken a twigitecture stance, the practicality of a boat hull seemed much better suited, and the construction took place with the help of boat-builder Paul Baker. The internal skeleton is made from local Douglas Fir and then covered with moulded reclaimed cedar, a material that is intended to age and document the passing of the year.

For the artist, the occupation of the space is as much of an artwork as the physical product. However, although his previous performance architecture works were very personal, almost monastic, experiences, this time round he’s inviting the company of schools to engage with the project throughout the year. After that, the egg will travel as a nomadic exhibition.
