EVO-powered X-Works Automotive sports car unveiled

British Midlands based X-Works Automotive is following in the footsteps of so many British cottage industry car-makers and building a car based on an existing production engine, in this case from a Mitsubishi Evo. They've spent the last 2 1/2 years developing the carbon chassis X-1. The 2,600 lb all wheel drive coupe comes equipped with a 350 hp two liter four cylinder, which can be upgraded to 500 hp.

Designers, Andrew Borrowman and Sean Prendergast, previously worked at Rover, Panther Cars and Grand Prix Engineering Services, and they seem to have done an admirable job with their new ride. The first X-1 was shown last weekend at the AutoSports International Show in Birmingham. If you are in the vicinity of Dudley, England this weekend you can see the car at Extreme Automobiles, who have been appointed as the first dealer. The projected price of the new car will be £45,000 if they actually get them into production.

De Engelse Mitsubishi-specialist X Works Automotive heeft een eigen sportwagen ontwikkeld. De basis van deze X1 is, niet geheel verrassend, rallykanon Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.

De X Works X1 Sportscar heeft een carrosserie die gemaakt is van een combinatie van koolstofvezel en aluminium. Het vierwielaangedreven onderstel komt van de Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. De geavanceerde Active Yaw Control zorgt samen met andere elektronica voor een extreem zeker bochtgedrag.
Ook het motorblok komt van de Evolution. De 2,0-liter viercilinder turbomotor levert in de X1 350 pk. Maar dat is nog maar het begin, want de tuner kan de motor opvoeren tot 500 pk.
De auto weegt 1180 kilo, maar er komt ook een raceversie met een leeggewicht van rond de 1000 kilogram. De precieze prestatiecijfers van de auto zijn niet bekend, maar het forse vermogen in combinatie met een laag gewicht doet vermoeden dat X Works Automotive het de dure exoten uit Italië behoorlijk lastig kan maken. In Engeland gaat de basisversie 45.000 pond kosten.

Ik vind wat pro drive gedaan had stukken mooier alleen. Ze hebben de auto zeker van achteren niet echt mooi gemaakt. Geef mij die ProDrive P2 maar...
