Project AE86.

Naast de Impreza heb ik ook nog een Toyota AE86 als project sinds een paar maanden.
Ik had er al een als dagelijks autootje maar deze auto's hebben de neiging om te rotten.
Dus toen ik de kans kreeg om samen met een goede vriend van me (Lennert ook "actief" op dit forum) een andere voor weinugh erbij te kopen was de deal snel gesloten.
Het chassis van deze tweede auto word nu opgeknapt, helaas kan ik er zelf nu niet al teveel aan meehelpen dus helpt Lennert gelukkig veel mee.

Anyway, ik had al een verslag op een aantal fora staan maar ik dacht dat jullie het misschien ook wel grappig zouden vinden om te zien hoe de auto word opgeknapt.
Het is alleen wel in het engels, ik neem aan dat het voor de meesten hier geen probleem zal zijn, en anders word het net als met de Asterix en Obelix gewoon plaatsjes kijken.

But before this it was already known as a racing and rally car.

As I was looking for a daily driver I wanted something special, something cheap but fun.
Then I came across this car and soon after I was hooked!

Unfortunatly, they tend to rust.....a lot!
So I bought another one and decided to give it a good make over, and this is the progress thread.

I have another forum on which I post this, so it is a bit of copy/paste but all the info is there.
Hope you guys like it, and if you have comments or suggestions I'd be happy to hear it!

This is my first car, very standard.
I'm still driving this one untill the other one is ready to receive it's parts.
Then this one will die and donor parts to the new chassis.








My aim is to make it something like this:









Quite simple, but still cool imo.

I could go balls out on it, cage wide body etc., but I already have another project with that attitude, and that's more than enough.
Plus it remains my daily driver, so a bit of comfort is nice aswell.

Lennert is someone I met through the AEU86.org forums.
He is a dutchie like me and has much knowledge of these cars, Ben-san met him in holland this year.
He helps me alot with the car, and actually was the guy who helped me get my first Hachi (Hachi is a nickname for this car, comes from Hachi Roku which literally means 8 and 6).
You will see him mentioned in the thread frequently.

Lennert and me also bought the car I'm using the shell from together, I use the chassis, and when it's done we will see what we will do with the chassis of the whtie car and the parts that are left.


As I said I'm going to use the shell, so I can drive my current car and make this one rust free and rock solid.

Main thing will be no rust and keeping it out.

Lennert and myself started the first work on my AE86 Today.
Biggest isseu off course ---> rust!

The amount of rust isn't as bad as most examples of this age, but it's still a bit of work.
Not much else to say about it so here are some pics:

Well, today I picked up my new roof!!!

Len and I went to fellow forum member Jasper.
He is cutting a Hachi to bits and was so kind to give me the roof and some other parts I can use for my project.

Lennert and Jasper introduce the all new Corolla Spider:

Today the car got scalped.

Because I was stupid enough to amputate a part of my finger a few weeks ago I could not help very much.

The guy in the picture is Bert, he will be doing all the metal work on the car.

Lennert will help me with cleaning, rebuilding etc.

Right, there's been work done on the car again.

Last Sunday me and Lennert removed some parts from the car.
The tank, exhaust, towhooks and a big part of the tar on the floor of the car were done by Len, I managed to get the heaterbox and loom out with one hand.

The tank wasn't easy to remove:




But Lennert did it and felt vitorious after:



Interoir is cleaned up, and a begin was made removing the tar plates:






There was a good oppertunity while the roof was off.
The car is going to be seam welded in places for extra strength and why not start here:








After that Bert was ready to put the roof back on, YAY!! :

The roof was not fully welded yesterday, and it's not even done today.
But progress was made nontheless.

I removed more parts, the inside of the firewall is clear, and thankfully not much rust is present.



I also removed some engineparts but not anything interesting enough to put on pictures.

Bert was welding all day, mostly with on part that was rusted, it took a bit of work to fix this part.


These were the smooth parts, all protected with zincspray now:













This was the part that needed replacing, first cut the rot out:



Then using a part of the old roof and trying it on for size:






Spraying weldable antirust primer on the back:





Than Bert put a gelly substance on the roof that soaks up the heat from welding, keeping it out of the roof itself, preventing tension in the metal.
Ingenious realy.





And viola, new piece of roof:

Je ziet deze wielen (zie foto) heel vaak op deze auto's, zijn dit Minilites, of...? Welke steek en Et waarde zijn ze?

Hoi Tim,

Deze vorm komt inderdaad veel voor, voor zover ik weet zijn ze afgeleid van het Watanabe wiel.
Alhoewel de Mini ook al worstwieltjes had vroegah.

Anyway, er zit wel altijd een klein verschil tussen de wielen en ik vind deze daarvan de mooiste.
Dit zijn de Compomotive ML1580 in 15", ET is 0, steek is 114.3 x 4.
Als je nog een set weet graag, ik ben nog zoekende!
