En een multitest op DR:Just a quick post to convey my thoughts so far on what I think of the R26.R that I collected from Steve at West's last Saturday:
Engine: reasonably powerful throughout the rev range, although power sharply trails off at the top end of its delivery. Despite this, it does like a good thrashing and responds very well indeed to being rung out. A lazy torque-fest it ain't (although it isn't actually lacking in torqure at all). The Ti exhaust / absence of soundproofing sounds awesome, whilst throttle response is very impressive for a turbocharged car. The 2.0 litre engine endows the car with ample pace but, for me at least, it'll never provide the satisfaction or you get from a good N/A engine. Ultimately, this car isn't really about the straight bits, though the torque does mean you get enough shove out of the tighter turns to trouble the R888s on cold tarmac.
Ride / handling: the handling's fantastic as you would have expected! The big surprise is how playful the rear end is; even more so than my Clio 182 Trophy was. A slight lift of the throttle mid-corner is enough to get the rear tyres working, whilst a lift on turn-in or a quick dab of brakes is enough to get some rather larger angles into play. It's certainly not the car's preferred style (we'll get to that in a moment), but it will duly oblige if you so wish! The R888s provide fantastic grip even in the cold / often damp weather we have at this time of year and their breakaway is fairly progressive - certainly much better than the Yokohama A-048s I had on my Focus RS. The steering's nicely weighted, if not massively feelsome, but you do get a decent enough relay of information about what's happening at road level through the chassis itself. As with any well set up car, it rewards smooth inputs for out-and-out pace; the tyres, suspension and LSD combine to create a fantastic amount of mechanical grip both through and out of corners. The ride is quite firm (when Renault claim that it is in fact softer than the R26, I suspect this wasn't on the Toyo tyres!), but it deals with mid-corner bends without a stutter. In short, it really is phenomenal through the bends. It'd show a clean pair of heels down a B-road to anything short of a higher spec Mitsubishi Evo (and yes, that includes Elises etc). On track it'll be a revelation!
General stuff: the harnesses. I was concerned by these at first - they're time-consuming to put on and because of this I fear over time some owners may neglect to put them on properly each and every time, but when you're really pressing on you can see why Renault elected to fit them. Simply put, they're fantastic. To say they inspire added confidence would be wrong, but they certainly bring an extra air of being at one with the car. The brakes are very good, with reasonable feel, but don't deserve any particular mention. The car itself looks great, and I'm very pleased with my chosen colour scheme of white with black wheels! I'm surprised by how refined it is in general driving - the soundproofing being put in the bin really hasn't had a massive impact on cabin noise, aside from the fact you're more aware of stones etc hitting the underside of the car. Tyre roar from the Toyos is also far more subdued than I expected it to be - again they're fair superior to the Yokohamas in this respect.
Sorry for the slightly dubious writing quality and severe lack of paragraphs, but I'm knackered and in a rush! A much better review will be coming your way fairly soon!
Geeft nog maar eens aan dat de FWD moet hebben om snel te zijn.Dennis van der Schoot schreef:Vermakelijk filmpje

Wat relaxed achter het stuur van de R26R en dan nog snel ook. Top.
