Honda Urban EV Concept – retro electric car set for 2019 release
First-generation Civic vibes for Honda's upcoming electric car
Honda has looked to the past for its car of the future, launching the retrospectively-styled Urban EV Concept at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.
Taking heavy styling inspiration from the first-generation Honda Civic, launched 45 years ago back in 1972 and running until 1979, the concept is built on an entirely new platform.
Honda president and CEO, Takahiro Hachigo, has confirmed that a production version of the car will hit European shores in 2019 – finally giving Honda a challenger in an increasingly competitive market.

No range is quoted for the concept, which does lead to some concern – combined with the urban billing and Honda's reluctance to launch a proper electric car up until now, we're hoping Honda won't give the car a token sub-100 mile range, adequate though it might be for purely urban drivers.
However far it goes (and however fast – like the range, no performance figures are quoted) its owners should have one of the more stylish electric vehicles on the road.
While there's definitely a retro influence in the Urban EV Concept, it's resolutely modern in its details, from the large multi-spoke alloy wheels to the LED rings around the headlights. Apparently, the grille can also be used to relay messages, and the doors are rear-hinged.
t's also relatively low, wide and squat, and Honda says it's 100mm shorter than the Jazz, making it around 3.9m long. That's still bigger than a VW Up (3.6m) and also makes it around 350mm longer than the original Civic whose styling themes it uses.
There's certainly nothing retrospective about the cabin however. Well, apart from boasts of slim A-pillars – a rare luxury these days. There's a wide windscreen that curls around at the corners, an enormous flat screen sits atop the dashboard, and the dash itself is a car-width floating panel housing very few physical controls.
There are bench seats both front and rear, which does beg the question as to how rear-seat passengers access the cabin, but there's a wonderful lounge-like vibe to the car. One that will almost certainly be replaced by something more conventional before 2019, but one sure to make urban driving more relaxing than usual.
The car features something Honda calls an Automated Network Assistant – a play on the concierge-type services becoming more common as vehicles get more connected – and Honda has also introduced the Honda Power Manager concept, a smart system for home energy.
