Het verhaal achter de motorrevisie van mijn E28 M5

It has been a while since I last shared an update about #231 in this thread. Just before it went in winter hibernation, I completed the brake-rebuild project to solve the brake-judder. However, soon after starting the hibernation period, I discovered two small leaks underneath the car. These were resolved in March 2015 by replacing the leaking clutch slave cylinder and rebuilding the hydraulic brake booster that suffered from a leaking low-pressure body seal. I plan to share a technical update, but I haven’t found the time to complete my project diary about this follow-up yet.



On the 11th of April, we participated in the spring meet & drive from the BMWE21.net ? Jeroen's BMW E21 Network | The world's No 1 E21 website! community in the Apeldoorn area. This event is not limited to owners of the BMW E21, but also to owners of other BMW models from the sharknose era. As part of the trip, we visited the Veluwsche Stroomtrein Maatschappij, a non-profit organization that maintains and operates old steam-powered Locomotives in the Netherlands.

After enjoying lunch where I met another owner of an E28 M5 by coincidence, we resumed our driving tour through the Dutch countryside where Jeroen (a.k.a member bmwe21.net) took some great pictures of the cars.

Some time ago, I was asked if I would be willing to lend my E28 M5 to BMW the Netherlands for a classic car exhibition at the Amsterdam International auto show that is currently being held (16 till 26 April 2015) at the RAI exhibition center. Since the exposure is relatively it was obvious that some agreements were made before committing….. But a long story short, #231 has taken the honours of participating in the top 75 classic cars that are displayed in booth 7.

The only other BMW on display in the classic exhibition is an early Neue Klasse from 1962. The organization of the Amsterdam International auto show was keen on getting their hands on an E28 M5 because it is now thirty years ago that the M5 was presented to the public in the 1985 event. As there aren’t that many around in Holland, let alone examples in presentable condition, they reverted back to a referral from the F. Breeman M event of June 2015 in which she participated as well.

Bedankt voor de leuke reacties. Ik heb van heel veel verschillende kanten, ook uit onverwachte hoek veel positieve feedback over mijn auto gekregen.

Inmiddels is de Autorai weer voorbij en zijn alle auto's in hal 7 weer terug op hun eigen stek, zo ook mijn E28S die zondagavond direct na sluiting weer werd teruggebracht. Omdat ik ook aan de contacten en de zorg die de BMW klassieke autoclub aan mijn auto heeft gegeven een goed gevoel heb overgehouden, heb ik mij daarbij aangesloten.

Het plan is om deze maand zowel naar het youngtimer event (17-5) en de Sharknose meeting (31-5) heen te gaan. De sharknose meeting is zeker, het youngtimer event op 17-5 is afhankelijk van de agenda.

Gezien de recente waardeontwikkeling van klassieke M's en dan met name de E30S M3 en de E28S M5 denk ik erover na om met de E28S v.w.b. toertochten wat minder risico te nemen. Daarom denk ik erover na om voor de meerdaagse Eiffel-toertocht in September mijn E34S mee te nemen. Daar moet ik nog een aantal voorbereidingen voor treffen, maar die zijn niet zo groot.

Enkel naar kijken is zo'n ding niet voor gemaakt, vooral als je heel veel plezier uit het rijden haalt is toch juist het rijden in de eiffel geweldig om met die wagen te doen?

Klopt; maar volgens mij had jacobt ook zón overweging met een van zijn auto's.

Ik heb de E28S vorig jaar nog laten taxeren en de waarde die er toen uitkwam was gelijk aan de oorspronkelijke MSRP van 1985 in Duitsland. Inmiddels kom ik daar zwaar aan te kort om een vergelijkbare auto voor terug te kopen, dus ik zal het taxatierapport moeten laten aanpassen. Daar zullen dan ook andere verz. eisen uit komen..... En dan heb je bij meerdaagse toertochten de overnachtingen waar de auto s'nachts ook buiten zal staan. Nou zal daar voor de September toertocht nog wel een mouw op aan te passen zijn, maar toch!

Ik zal de E28S wel blijven gebruiken, wellicht ook wel in September, maar alleen als ik het verschil tussen de huidige taxatiewaarde en de actuele vraagprijzen kan mitigeren via een aanpassing van de taxatie. Daarvoor ben ik een dossier aan het opbouwen en ik verwacht nog wel enige discussie en doorlooptijd voordat e.e.a. geregeld is, vooral omdat er in NL geen vergelijkingsmateriaal is. Indien dit niet op tijd lukt zal ik met veel plezier mijn E34S meenemen. Dat is de opvolger en daarmee heel vergelijkbaar kwa rijden, dus zeker geen straf.

Die bedragen worden in DLD ook al gevraagd. Kort geleden eentje met een lage kilometerstand voor 120k Euro en nu eentje in Salzburg voor 138k Euro! En dan laat ik die van Salyia in Californië van 75k Euro even buiten beschouwing. Of deze bedragen daadwerkelijk betaald worden is een tweede, maar het gaat heel hard i.d.d. Dickie Meaden had daar een tijdje terug een aardige column over, die kocht een 964 RS zonder investeringsdoel een paar jaar geleden, twijfelt nu ook als ie er hard mee rijdt.

Within a month following our driving trip to the Eifel & Rhineland Palatinate with the Jeroen’s BMW E21 network we organized an autumn meet & drive in the south of Limburg and the Nearby Wallonia on the 24th of October. This was a joint event between the Dutch BMW M5/M6 network and Jeroen’s BMW E21 network to close the 2015 driving season.

From the M5/M6 network, six members and five cars attended, including an original E12S ///M535i, an E28S M5, an E34S M5 and two E34S M5 Touring’s. Together with ten E21’s including a rare Hartge 323i, several venerable E21 323i’s and four ‘odd-balls’ a total of nineteen cars and thirty-two people attended this single day event.

Personally, I had the choice between using my E34S M5 and my E28S M5, but because (1) the forecast predicted dry and slightly sunny weather conditions and (2) Remy brought his E21 ///M535i and last but not least (3) E34S M5’s were already present, the E28S M5 took the preference because we already had scheduled for some theme photography for which we identified two theme’s, namely the classic M5’s and forty years of E21.



The location for these photoshoots was the abandoned petrol station in Withuis, a small village at the border with Belgium. Once this village was a main crossing station for travellers between the Netherlands and Belgium, but since highway A2 was opened decades ago the number of travellers declined, which probably forces the old petrol station to close its doors at some point in history. The abandoned petrol station has since then been left to deteriorate against the elements, probably because tearing it down requires removal of the contaminated soil as well which renders any new construction projects uneconomical from day one.



The E12 M535i on the left stood at the basis of the later E28 M5 and thus both cars share more than most people think. The main difference is that the E28 M5 had the exotic M88/3 racing engine from the E26 M1.



The lagoon-green E34 M5 on the right is the last of the hand build Motorsport cars. This lovely example has the last evolution step of the original M88 engine, the S38B38 with 3,8 litres and 347hp (DIN).



This excellent E12 M535i with the very rare BBS/Mahle rims may very well be one of the best surviving examples of this model.



With 286hp, the first generation of the M5's brought not only supercar performance to the class of executive saloons, but handling and agility exceeded the capabilities of most sports cars as well. This combination was and still is unique.



The E34 M5 was also offered in an estate version, a.k.a touring. This example is one of the last 1995 models of which only 211 have been built.









With the M-striping and model specific front air-dam and trunk-spoiler, the E12 M535i stood out to its performance.





Compared to the E12 M535i, the E28 M5 is very subtle and can be seen as a Jackal in the disguise of Mr Hall.





Each and every one of these cars has been assembled by hand by a group dedicated engineers in a time that the letter ///M did not stand for 'Marketing', but for 'Motorsport'.









The E21 is now forty years old, which was reason for a celebration party. Even nowadays, the E21 with its light chassis and especially with the powerful 323i drivetrain still convinces with its agility and nimbleness.

Het komt niet vaak voor dat ik beide M5’s tegelijkertijd toegelaten heb. De E34S M5 mocht mee naar de Eifel maar zou normaliter een week of twee daarna geschorst worden, echter met de najaars meet & drive in het verschiet en het slechte herfstachtige weer gedurende de eerste drie weken van Oktober was het lange tijd onzeker of het weer wel goed genoeg zou zijn om de E28S van stal te halen, dus liet ik de E34S maar even. Maar de najaars meet & drive was eigenlijk de aftrap van de prachtige oudewijven zomer waar we nog steeds middenin zitten, dus leek het me een goed idee om met beide M5’s een fotosessie te doen met de herfst als thema.



Ondanks dat ik in een schitterende omgeving woon zijn er weinig architectonische kunstwerkjes om als achtergrond te dienen…. Helaas, maar met de herfst als thema was dat ook net perse nodig.























Op de terugweg nog even uit de losse pols met de D300s een aantal foto’s van mijn vader geschoten. Het is leuk om te zien dat hij op zijn leeftijd nog steeds kan genieten van mooie auto’s.





De komende winter gaan beide auto’s natuurlijk op stal. De E34S heeft wat werk nodig, enerzijds een nieuw stuurhuis, anderzijds een nieuwe karter-pan pakking. Die twee werkzaamheden laat zich prima combineren waarbij we preventief meteen maar een rondje drijfstang lagers gaan plannen. De E28S heeft sinds de motorrevisie bijna 15000km gereden en is dus toe aan een verse inspectie II.
