Hoe Hamilton gisteren p3 veilig stelde was pure klasse.

Porpoising: this week there will be a meeting between the FIA and the teams
The intervention of the FIA regarding the porpoising problem has discounted many teams, which are opposing the modification of the regulation during the current season. Among the supporters instead there is Toto Wolff who has come to the clash with the other Team Principals in Canada, above all Mattia Binotto and Christian Horner. The climate is getting hot, not only on the track, and the FIA is looking for a solution that satisfies the teams, but protects the health of the drivers.
If on the track the fight between Red Bull and Ferrari lasted until the last lap of the race, with Max Verstappen who managed to get the better of Carlos Sainz , another important 'fight' took place off the track. . The post-GP in Baku was marked by strong complaints from some drivers about porpoising, which is why the weekend in Montreal opened with the communication by the FIA of a new Technical Directive, number 39 of this 22, which intervened in safety , with the aim of safeguarding the health of pilots, to limit porpoising.
It goes without saying that this decision sparked mixed reactions from the teams, who then gathered in Stefano Domenicali's office for one of the classic meetings that the Formula 1 boss holds with the team principals. If on the one hand, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff praised the FIA's intervention in the name of safety, on the other Mattia Binotto has firmly spoken out against this decision, supported in the foreground by Christian Horner, TP of Red Bull. , but also from other colleagues who did not take this new DT issued by the Federation well.
Mercedes: no second tie because there was no team vote
What happened during the Canadian weekend? Let's try to clarify what happened even at a temporal level. On Thursday, the FIA announced the introduction of a new Technical Directive - which we have extensively analyzed here - anti porpoising, which granted a second tie as an immediate remedy after the one made legal during the Barcelona tests - at the request of Ferrari and who had already created many discussions. Pat Fry of Alpine, in fact, had publicly criticized this concession by the Federation because there were those, like them, who had worked to make their fund less flexible.
As the concession of the second tie was made known by the time the teams had largely already arrived in Canada, there was very little time to react. Except for Mercedes, with the other teams, including Ferrari, quite amazed about the speed of the update. In fact, the W13 appeared already on Thursday itself, both on the old and new specification bottom - prepared for the use of a second tie rod, attracting the curiosity of the opponents.
“The technical directive was released on Thursday and our technicians were already flying to Canada. We therefore did not have a second tie at our disposal. If someone had used it, it would have been an injustice to others who have not had the opportunity to think and produce it. A stiffer bottom means being able to lower the car and gain performance “, said the Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer at the beginning of the weekend. “However, the technical directive is not a rule , this means that the second tie is still illegal. Using it would mean exposing yourself to a possible protest. " continued the US engineer with Romanian citizenship.
The first tie, granted by the Federation during the Barcelona tests, in fact had to pass a vote by the teams to be used in the first weekend of the season (Bahrain), something that was missing and still missing for that granted by the FIA in Canada. Not only for this reason, Mercedes did not take it to the track in qualifying and therefore in the race, but, according to them, also because it did not give the hoped-for advantages, as well as the new background specification which had a 'hole' in the central part.
Binotto: "A technical directive cannot unilaterally change the regulations" The decision of the International Federation to leverage on the safety issue has impatient many team principals, so much so as to lead Toto Wolff to a real frontal attack against his colleagues. “It is hypocritical of someone to manipulate what is said to maintain a performance advantage by playing some kind of political game towards the FIA which is trying to improve the situation for everyone. It's not just about Mercedes, everyone has problems with these too stiff cars . Manipulating this situation to one's advantage is pitiful ”.Very harsh statements and without too many words, of a team principal alone, without allies, not even the very close Aston Martin that with the B version of the AMR22 has solved most of the hopping problems.
The technical directive issued by the FIA indirectly imposed on the various teams some set-ups which, once verified by the FIA directly on the track during the third free practice, to verify that the real vertical accelerations were not higher than the maximum value imposed by the Federation, had to remain frozen with lots of team report. If a car did not pass the verification on the track, the Federation would impose 'standard' changes to the set-up, such as an increase in the heights from the ground (losing performance) in order not to run into a disqualification.
A real change to the technical regulation , which is not the original purpose of these technical directives, just as pointed out by Mattia Binotto in the meeting between the Team Principal and Stefano Domenicali, which was then also confirmed to the microphones of the various journalists. “ The decision of the FIA is not applicable. A technical directive serves to explain a content of the regulation, not to amend it. To do this, it is necessary to propose the modification to the World Sports Council which will have to cast a vote on it ".
The thought of the head of the Maranello team was married to his other colleagues, one above all Christian Horner who had already continued to propose a very simple solution to Mercedes after the race from Baku, the team that most of all pushes for important regulatory changes. starting from this season, that is to say “raise the car and lose a bit of performance”. Which was reiterated in Canada by Alpine's Szafnauer: “These cars can be driven safely, just increase the ground clearance for those with problems”.
However, according to Mercedes, beyond a certain ground clearance value the W13 cannot be raised. Truth or hoax? We tried to ask an engineer from a mid-group team who pointed out to us how Aston Martin, by changing the aerodynamic concept but remaining with the same rear suspension as the Mercedes W13, has resolved or in any case significantly attenuated the porpoising. To put it to Christian Horner, the Mercedes problems have nothing to do with shortcomings in the new regulations, it is only the aerodynamic concept of the W13 that is wrong.
This week there will be an important meeting between the FIA technical department and the technical directors of the various teamsA few tens of minutes before the start of the first free practice sessions of the Canadian weekend, as we had anticipated a few hours earlier in the Italian morning , the FIA communicated to the teams with an email the invalidity of the technical directive 39 for the Canadian weekend. The goal of the control body of the top four-wheel motor series has become to store data between acceleration peaks and oscillation frequencies. Data that will be analyzed and from which a study will come out also to understand the real dangers of porpoising / bottoming on the pilots' health. The Federation also wants to understand if from these data it is possible to derive a value that is applicable to all the cars, which bouncing differently makes the path started by the Tombazis team with the TD39 / 22 difficult.
In the second part of this week there will be a meeting between the technical office of the International Federation and the technical directors of the various teams , to try to find a common idea that tries to safeguard the health of the pilots. It will not be easy, if we consider that the basic idea, the one proposed by the FIA in the DT39 / 22 was not liked at all by the teams, for now very firm on the desire not to make (technical) regulatory changes in that sense during the current season.
