335i vs. 997S
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure that some of you read the title of this thread and scratched your head, mumbled something about the poster being an idiot, and so on. I'm not asking for opinions on the two, posting a "kill" story, or anything along those lines. Rather, I'm posting this to compare the ownership experience I've had with my 335i vs. that of a 997S I bought two years ago.
If you've got a lot of time on your hands, here's a thread that describes the awful ownership experience I had with the 997S:
997 S in shop for 7th time in 3 months!
I've only had the 335i for a week, but my expectation is that it's not going to be the nightmare that the 997S was. To start, the dealer is much nicer, and the overall experience has been wonderful by comparison. If there are issues with the car I believe that they'll do a better job of managing them.
I realize that the two cars are quite different in terms of what they're meant for, and the 997S was over 2X the price of the 335i. Some of you may wonder why I'm not driving a 650i or an M6, so I'll tell you a few of the reasons.
First, if I wanted a car in that price range I'd want something that looks good, and the 6 series doesn't meet that criteria by any stretch. The front end isn't pretty, but it's the ugly rear end that really turns me off to that car. Call it a Bangle Butt, Hooydonkadonk, or whatever, but I just can't get over the lumpy styling and huge cut lines on most recent BMWs. The 335i is, to my eye, the best looking BMW in recent years, and I have high hopes that they're going to fix the styling on the rest of the cars soon.
Second, the 335i is a much more practical car for daily driving, with a back seat that seems to be easier to use than the 6 series. The 6 series rear seat reminds me a bit of the 997, which is funny given how much longer the car is than that car or the 3 series.
Third, I have been racing in the SPEED World Challenge this year and have spent enough money on that to need some time to recover, so the price point for the 335i is attractive. In a year or so the new M3, a redesigned 6 series, and so on may be something I'll consider, although the racing may take precedence over that...
Now for a quick comparison of the cars in daily driving:
Acceleration - I know that the 997S will spank the 335i in terms of straight-line speed, but quite honestly the 335i would be quicker in some situations. I had the 6-speed manual in the 997S and the Steptronic in the 335i, and it's amazing to me how fast the 335i can downshift and accelerate from any speed. If the 997S driver was in the right gear and could shift well then they'd probably out-accelerate the 335i driver, but I'd put my money on the latter for most drivers. I've been driving a Viper Competition Coupe with nearly 600 HP and weighing only 3100 lbs. that can spank most anything on the street, but the 335i still impresses (and can scare) me.
Handling - The 997S certainly has more ultimate grip, but you have to think a bit more when driving it than the 335i. If you've driven 911s, even the modern ones, you have to get used to the rear weight bias and the sometimes strange sensations coming from the front end. They're not bad, and in the hands of an experienced driver the 911s are awesome. That being said, I'd bet most drivers would have an easier time going fast in the 335i. The Viper has close to 50-50 weight distribution, so I've come to appreciate what that can mean in terms of handling.
Braking - My 997S had the PCCB brakes which were phenomenal, being better than anything I've driven on the street and better than some race cars. These were certainly overkill for the street, and I don't think I'd get them again if I ever bought another Porsche. I can't say that the 335i brakes are as good as those on the 997S, but I'm still amazed at how fast they'll stop the car. I haven't been on the track yet to measure fade, but for the street these are great brakes.
Comfort - The 997S is a fine automobile to be in, much nicer than the 9X6 and previous generations. When I first got the car I thought "Wow, they've finally brought the materials up to BMW/Audi/Mercedes levels." It had a nearly full-leather interior, which was nicer than the partial-leather in the 335i, but I don't know that I'd say it was really better overall. The 997S has a fairly button-intensive audio/nav/hvac/etc. setup that I never quite figured out how to fully use without looking at it. The 335i isn't perfect, but it does seem to be a bit less complicated to use for most tasks. I don't have iDrive, but after driving a 525xi loaner last week, I'm glad that I don't as that was as bad or worse than anything I've ever tried. BMW and others should look to Lexus to see how to make these systems easy to use.
Practicality - The 997S has a decent trunk in the front and you can put some stuff on the shelf when the back seats are folded, but it can't hold a candle to the huge trunk and split folding seats in the 335i. Granted it's a sports car, but the limited space can mean having to use another car at times when you'd still be driving the 335i. The back seat room in the 997S is a joke, really only being good for very small children. My 10 year old stepson would fit in there because he wanted to be there, not because it was really comfortable. I'm 6'1" and 230 lbs. and can fit in the 335i back seat when I've adjusted the front seat to be comfortable, so while it' s not a sedan, it's a practical coupe for real-world usage.
Looks - I've been a Porsche nut since I was a kid, so I like the 911 shape, even if it's illogical. The 997S is gorgeous, and certainly screams something that the 335i can't compete with. That being said, I made the mistake of getting a black one and constantly fought with trying to keep it clean and swirl free. the 335i is Space Gray, which is a very sexy color that seems to be much eaier to keep looking nice. It doesn't attract quite the same level of attention, but I've noticed that "car guys" know what it is, and people in general seem to like its looks.
I'll post more comments as time goes on, and will be happy to try to compare anything else that people are interested in

Poetsers aller landen vereenigt u.
