Project AE86.

Ok, had a lot of delay here.
I ordered parts which were late or wrong.
And I was busy with other stuff.

Anyway, have done a few things though.

Made a start with the bucket seat, but I had no idea it was going to be such a pita!!
The ae86 is not really made for one I must conclude.
I tried to make it work with a slide but it was way to high.
Started out with reworking the Impreza frame, so I took it apart:



But it was still too high in the end, so I ditched those.
Then I cut off the side frames on the chair a bit and constructed a new frame for them:





Welded and sandblasted:







Had to remove some material from the side frame:



Now it's fixed, but the height of the chair is now as high as the stadard chair...
And this is just one side! Pffft...

Ik word er soms wel wat moe van kerel.

Had some plates lasered for the front subframe, I have lowered the subframe 5mm only, the engine mount plates are 5mm also.







Now the engine has the perfect height I think:




Then another big job, the gearbox subframe.
I want it to look as something that came out of the factory in end, so I did it the hard way.
I started with cutting up the original frame and reworking the parts I needed:





Welded:





And this for both sides.
After that the middle part was to be made, so I started with a cardboard template:



Then the real thing:







And welded that up too:



Now only the 4 corner parts need to be filled up.

So, Tuesday I was really happy because for the first time the engine and gearbox were hanging in their own frames for the first time.

....Unitl I looked at the next step, the steering rack.
When I was test fitting it all fitted nicely, but meanwhile I had moved the engine back 8mm and it was sitting a bit lower and tilted aswell.
Never stopped to see what it did for the rack.
So now the oilpan was in the way, more specificly, a bolt of the oilpan.

To make matters more complicated I noticed the MR2 steering rack was actually 20mm's longer than the AE86 one, so the quiafe quick rack was to short also, that is why I the steering angle looked off to the left.
Luckily I noticed in time, and luckily it needed moving the steering rack, which gave me 10mm more room with engine.

So I decided the relocate the rack mount on the subframe and rework the bolt on the oilpan.







Now it fits! And I can start removing the webbing for the rack to fit properly under the engine.


Then some new parts:

A longer stabi, have not testfitted it yet:

I mounted the new stabi to see how it fits, and it looks great!

pas wel op met zo'n stabie...als je de auto opkrikt komt ie enorm omhoog voor...(denk ik tenminste)
ik heb mijne ook zo lopen bij de Hartge en dacht huh...en net voor de radiateur langs
omdat die op het lange rechte stuk ook niet verbonden is met de carros net als die.

Diep respect voor al het werk wat je erin stopt, maar hoe lang ga je nog bezig zijn? Zolang ik je ken ben je altijd bezig geweest met opknappen van je impreza, nu de AE86.. Word het niet snel tijd dat je weer eens gaat rijden?

Today I cleared the way for the steering rack.

It was alot of grinding, but it turned out ok.

Now I can weld up the subframe.

Ga je dat nog weer dicht proberen te maken of denk je dat je hier mee weg gaat komen (je hapt toch een stukje uit de constructie zeg maar)?

Ik ga dat wel dichtmaken, er komt zo vuil bij de koppeling.
Ik zit alleen nog te prakizeren wat de mooiste oplossing is.

Aram, ik kan begrijpen dat je er af en toe moe van wordt (ik ben met een vergelijkbaar monsterproject bezig) maar wat wordt het gaaf zeg. Echt alles tot in de puntjes gefabriceerd. Helemaal geweldig gewoon.

Komt er nog een Quaife 2.5 ratio steering rack in?
Ik heb er 1 in de AW11 zitten; 1 van de beste upgrades die ik gedaan heb!

Ik ga dat wel dichtmaken, er komt zo vuil bij de koppeling.
Ik zit alleen nog te prakizeren wat de mooiste oplossing is.

Je kunt toch een plaatje aluminium op maat maken en draad tappen in de bak. Zo te zien genoeg vlees voor..
Sleufje in de bak frezen waar het plaatje dan invalt, anders komt er toch nog vuil langs..

Je kunt toch een plaatje aluminium op maat maken en draad tappen in de bak. Zo te zien genoeg vlees voor..
Sleufje in de bak frezen waar het plaatje dan invalt, anders komt er toch nog vuil langs..

Er is maar 4 a 5 mm ruimte tussen het stuurhuis en de motor, als je daar een plaatje tussen stopt word het te krap.
Ik denk dat ik een paar stukjes kunstof op maat maak in de gaten en die vastzet.

Ok, had lots of work to do so not to much time for the toyo.

But i managed to finish the front subframe and do some work on the gearbox frame.

Made my own battleversion...ehh version.

Because I have no idea how much stress is going to be on it I went for 2767 tool steel, should be strong enough.

Got the tap Friday, so it will be finished monday.


Then, the engine and box go in the car for the first time!!

Off course a new hole had to be cut in the tunnel, making an entry for the gearlever.

I drilled the spotwelds and massaged the brace back a bit, I really didn't want to cut it.

But it turned out nice I think:





And here it sits in the car on it's own:





I pulled it out again and started disassembling the auxilaries for cleaning.
Next time the engine goes in, it stays in.
