The Morgan Aero 8 is the lightest V8 sports car in the world. 2008 sees the start of production of the new 4.8 litre V8 version. The latest BMW V8 engine takes Morgan performance to the next level.
The new engine adds 13% more power, raising output to 367 bhp, giving a power to weight ratio of over 315 bhp/tonne, enough to propel the car from 0 – 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 170 mph.
New for Morgan is an automatic gearbox option. ZF’s latest 6 HP26 six speed gives even better performance than a manual gearbox due to its special lock up clutch, low power loss design and instant change characteristic. The automatic is useable either as a full automatic for more relaxed driving or in sport manual mode when the bespoke gear lever will hold the engine revs up to the maximum in each gear, increase change speed and ‘blip’ the throttle to smooth down changes.
alu chassis Morgan aero'sMorgan remains a small affair, building around 600 cars a year in a series of brick built sheds dotted around the works, and that overall volume isn’t expected to rise when the SuperSports comes on stream next year. Morgan hopes to build at least 200 examples of the new SuperSports, but that will just mean a longer wait for customers who anyway seem to find that a period of anticipation heightens the pleasure of acquisition. ‘It’s just not like an ordinary car in that respect,’ says Matthew, ‘because when people buy a Morgan they already know they’re going to keep it forever. It becomes one of the family’
Morgan has stolen the show at the Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance after it unveiled this: the sensational-looking Eva GT – a four-seater luxury grand tourer that will go into production at the Malvern-based sports car specialist’s factory in 2012.
The Eva GT will break new ground for Morgan by offering accommodation for four and their luggage, in a vehicle built using the firm’s unique aluminium body and chassis technologies.
Underneath the Eva GT lies a development of the same lightweight bonded aluminium chassis you’ll find in the Aeromax Supersports, and wrapped around it are superformed aluminium body panels similar to those adopted by the aircraft industry.
However, inside this new Morgan is a proper two-plus-two cabin layout and a generous boot, making it a much more practical offering than any of the Aero-series cars that have preceeded it.
“It’s intended to be capable as serving as everyday family transport as well as a luxury GT,” Charles Morgan told Autocar. “The rear seats will be comfortable for children and small adults, and should serve for occasional use for taller occupants.”
Allowing for that extra practicality, the Eva GT is longer than the 4.2-metre Aeromax, measuring 4.7-metres in length, 1.8-metres in width and 1.2-metres tall.
Just as it did for the Aero 8 and Aeromax, Morgan has gone to BMW to supply the powertrain for its new car. The Eva GT runs Munich’s 302bhp, 295lb ft twin-turbo straight six and, fitted with direct injection, it’ll make the car compatible with Euro 6-emissions regulations.
Weighing just 1250kg, the Eva GT should be capable of 62mph in around 4.5sec and 170mph flat out, but just as appealing to its owners will be its potential day-to-day fuel economy return of 40mpg and modest 200g/km CO2 emissions.
Those expecting antiquated features from the Eva GT will be surprised to find out that it will come with anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, xenon headlights, satellite navigation and the very latest multi-stage ‘smart’ airbags as standard. There will be a choice of two gearboxes with the car: a six-speed ZF automatic or six-speed manual.
Morgan hasn’t yet set final prices for the Eva GT as “they’ll depend on demand”, proprietor Charles Morgan told us, “but you can be confident that it’ll be cheaper than the Supersports”.
Expect it to be priced somewhere between £70,000-£85,000. Deposits are already being taken for delivery in 2012.
