Re: PPP - Pure Porsche Porno
911 of Caterham is nogal ander dingetje.

Re: PPP - Pure Porsche Porno

Re: PPP - Pure Porsche Porno

Re: PPP - Pure Porsche Porno
En dit ook mega interessant vind ik:
https://www.quora.com/Why-does-Porsche- ... of-the-911
Als antwoord op:There are different reasons for Porsche to use MacPherson strut front suspension on 911s. To expand this into a completed answer, it will be long. I’m neither Porsche designer nor car expert, the conclusion I have here came from the knowledge of fixing my own Porsche 911.
Although there are 7 generations of 911 to this point, only 3 different MacPherson strut front suspension designs ever used on 911s: torsion bar (1964-1989), 964/993 (1990-1999), and 996-991 (2000+). Every time Porsche changes 911 front suspension design they could go for double-wishbone, but in the end, most of the 911s still have MacPherson strut in the front. Before going into the detail, there are 2 things need to be clarified.
Firstly, is it possible to have double-wishbone on 911? Yes, it has been done (sort of), officially, 3 times. First was 959, second was 911 GT1, third was 991 RSR (since 2014). That makes up a few points: it can be done, and in 959 it doesn’t seem to take out a lot of luggage space; so if the racing regulation allows Porsche will definitely use double-wishbone for performance. Also 959 and 911 GT1 (road version) seems to make use of the original strut tower, and the double-wishbone looks like a kit-set to original suspension mount, not like the completed new front structure on the 991 RSR.
Secondly, what is the ‘range’ of 911s? 959, 911GT1 and 911 RSR usually considered to be not quite ‘911’ anymore; on the other hand 914, Boxster and Cayman, though not 911, share a lot of front suspension component with typical 911s. If put these ‘lesser Porsche’ into the 911 family, MacPherson strut seems to be a logical choice. It may not be a direct consequence, but if 911 uses double-wishbone, Boxster and Cayman may not be existed, at least not in its current form (more of a continuation of 924/944/968?).
Go back to the 911 suspension design. The torsion bar era MacPherson strut was not a bad choice in its time. In 1964, Ferrari 250 GTO still offered leaf spring rear suspension as a top performance road-going car, so 911’s suspension was kind of modern and advanced at the time. A Porsche 935 with MacPherson strut front suspension also wined the LeMans 1979. Clearly, in this era, big-turbo horsepower and cutting floor panel to lower COG was more important than suspension geometry. Also, wheels in this era tend to have smaller wheel center offset. For example, the typical 911 Fuchs wheels have ET36 wheel center offset, but the 964 cast wheel has ET55 offset. This may be a limitation of early forged wheels, but it also limits the benefit of using double-wishbone and the size of the brake disc / calliper if the steering axle cannot be located near the wheel center. One additional thing to the torsion bar era is the 911 body structure was considered to be too soft as a sports car at the time. torsion bar design means the strut tower only holds the shock absorber damper but not the spring, which doesn't need to be strong. each suspension only required 2 reinforced mounting points rather than 3 if coil-spring was used, and that allows a soft body car to still have a decent suspension dynamic.
Since 964 and 993, we see the introduction of 4WD system and new cast wheel design with a higher offset. The existence of 959 shows that in-wheel double wishbone was possible with 4WD and all other fancy stuffs could be installed to a 911 body. But that was challenging and expensive. For normal 911s, MacPherson strut was a reasonable choice. If not using the in-wheel type double-wishbone, the ‘other’ double-wishbone option has less performance gain but much heavier and more complex. For 911 in this era, updating the rear suspension was more important; so they had Weissach axle on the 964 and finally multi-link on the 993.
From the 996 on, again 911GT1 and 991 RSR have double-wishbone, but they’re in a different category. This generation of 911s uses separated lower control arms similar to the original Porsche 935 racer. This is different from the BMW / Mercedes front suspension which uses two control arms to form a virtual steering axis for better king-pin offset. Porsche has the separated tension-rod design, with the front arm (radius rod / tension rod) connected to the main arm (coffin arm). It doesn’t seem to do much in the static view; but similar to the Weissach axle, the extra linkage would allow the suspension to have a bit more flexibility in motion, and improve the suspension dynamic characteristic. Something like better anti-dive / anti-lift, or slightly better cast / camber gain in motion depends on where to use bush and ball joint. It isn’t as good as in-wheel double-wishbone, but the same design can make room for 4WD, and cheap enough to put on a Boxster. In fact, the same type of MacPherson strut with separated tension rod design appears in some very successful sports car designs, such as Toyota AE86 and Nissan 240Z.
So the conclusion is: MacPherson struts on a 911 is about cost, not the cost of 911, but the cost of all Porsches sharing the same front suspension design (914/986/987/981). Also, to have a 4WD option on a small sports car, in-wheel double wishbone could be possible but too expensive, and non-in-wheel double-wishbone is heavy / complex with limited benefit. Compare to other sports cars in the same class, 911 usually has lower COG and more rear-weight bias, which makes the front suspension camber gain less of a problem. Last but not least, current generation of 911 uses one of the best versions of MacPherson strut suspension, which was proven by the racing record and it’s more than enough to win. But if you have enough cash in the pocket or you can win LeMans, Porsche will give you a 911 with double-wishbone suspension.

Re: PPP - Pure Porsche Porno
Thanks!
