Petrolheads in Britain
How come there are so many of them over there?
In the Netherlands being a pertrolhead isn't very socially acceptable.
You're spoiling the environment, you pay taxes beyond belief when buying a car and then when running it and behind every tree there can be a policeman with a lasergun or gatsometer who's after your license.
In short, having fun while driving is not acceptable.
If you want to have fun, try smoking pot or go to the red light district in Amsterdam, but cars are merely a method of transport for getting from a to b, preferably in an undistinct car like a VW Golf or Opel (Vauxhall) Zafira and by driving 118km/u on the left lane. You're not allowed to go any faster so there's absolutely no reason to move over and let some speedmaniac who does want to go faster by. In fact, when he does manage to overtake you flash your lights at him and start waving frantically: that'll show him!
How different are things just 25 miles of Chunnel away.
Great roads, a tradition of speed and sportscars, I once read that in Britain 50.000(!) people work in the racing industry, genuine enthousiasm for cars, not just from the usual suspects of petrolheads, but also from the general public and even from the police and traffic wardens.
Where does this tradition come from?
And more importantly, how can we get it over here?

That sounds familiar to me... Dutch Folks need to go to Petrolhead therapy or so.Peter Tunissen schreef:...and by driving 118km/u on the left lane. I once went to Land's End with my Honda 4-stroke moped (CD-50, with 72cc). What I've noticed is that almost everybody kept behind us, even when we drove those little bikes up the hills with 20 km/h.
People have a lot of respect for eachother overthere. If you like someone or not. Mayby it's different in heavy traffic, but on those british country roads, driving is really great.

We're just showing off our languageknöbbel over here.
It's basically a trial forum this.
If we end up with only Dutch people posting here, it will be cancelled, but let's wait for CBR first.
Quite a few PH'ers coming over for that and maybe even more for the LTR return favour weekend. Would be nice to see some of them showing up here.

This will teach you to ask for more English people!
Tcha! So negative!Wim te Riet schreef:Maybe a stupid question: we're Dutch, so why do we keep writing in English while no foreigners are joining us here???
Sorry for being so negative...
Somebody wishes for more English and look what happens!
I have to say I only found this place because TomNL posted some pictures on Pistonheads.com following a Tunnel Run to Paris After a couple of hours it dawned on me that the 'happy-smiling-driving-fun.com' part of his link might actually be a forum so I started nosing around and found this thread...
Actually it's a bit tricky to read Dutch without learning it first so I think I did quite well even to register. Oh, and I used to speak a little bit of German which seems to help!?
I absolutely loved the bit about "Why are we speaking English on a Dutch forum when we're all Dutch?" Posted in English too. Very existential
I think a few more people will begin to arrive here since some of you guys have been on the Pistonheads site for a while now. I have chatted to Dink and Andrew (TheFarmer - does he like pigs or something?) and of course we had 'The Dutch Invasion' a while back for a Tunnel Run etc. I've also seen GTRene posting a bit on the Ultima forum. Sadly I don't have an Ultima, I'm just lurking on there dreaming
On Pistonheads we also got to see a visit to Albert's massive car collection, including the video of a spare engine being started on a bench - very nice! I can't believe the cars some of you guys have - two Z06s on the last Tunnel Run and Dodge Vipers seem to be popular too!
I guess I should introduce myself (bit late now) - I'm Andy (also TheStoat on Pistonheads) and I have a sensible silver S2000. No, I'm not a hairdresser but if you're willing to risk it I *will* cut your hair for you Just don't blame me if you end up with something rude shaved in your hair...
I think the more you guys pop over to London for a bit of a rally the more you'll see us guys on this forum. And we'll probably take up Peter's invitation to go to the Red Light District to smoke some drugs too Peter's paying right?
Andy
P.S. I'm off now to see what cool car pics your site has, just loading up the Babelfish website and then I'm sure I'll be fine
P.P.S. Anyone on here going to Le Mans? Might be fun to meet up and if your car is better than mine maybe we could swap

Do you all look like that? Even Tom?
Seriously now, nine pages? That's some major-league perving!

Hmmm... I'm thinking that tomorrow would be a good date for the return Tunnel Run. Am I right in assuming "you'll" all be there?Tom schreef:Offcourse...... didn't you notice us in Paris? Sniffed to much petrol?TheStoat schreef:Do you all look like that? Even Tom?

Andy, cheers mate. The S2000 is no way a hairdressers car . . .
[img:800:548]http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h254/ ... 184112.jpg[/img]
I fit perfectly and if I'd to pick a new sportscar right now I'd be seriously tempted.

Are you going to Spa in Oct?
Cheers, Albert
